Birnam is a Victorian village set on the banks of the River Tay opposite the small town of Dunkeld. The surrounding wooded hills offer superb walking with an integrated network of way-marked river and forest walks.
Local amenities include a grocery shop, post office, restaurants and bus stop within 5 minutes walking distance, with the train station half a mile away. Nearby Dunkeld has a Tourist Information Centre and a wider range of shops and restaurants.
The area is often referred to as the “Gateway to the Highlands” and is scenically very beautiful with wonderful views of river, loch and mountain. There are countless castles, historic houses and gardens to be explored, making it an ideal centre for lovers of history and the great outdoors.
Sporting and outdoor pursuits are well catered for including fishing, golf, pony trekking and cycling. Visitors interested in wild life may get a glimpse of ospreys at nearby Loch of the Lowes where an exhibition centre and hide has been established. Sailing and other water sports are available a little further away on Loch Tay.
Perth, some 12 miles (20 kilometres) to the south, has all the charms and amenities of a rural county town. Pitlochry, a similar distance to the north, is surrounded by glorious mountain scenery. The town hosts the famous Festival Theatre, as well as some excellent shopping.
